Martin Miller's Custom Laney PC

Who was this built for?

Martin Miller is a musician from Germany, who over the past decade has made a name for himself as a guitar player & YouTuber counting over 850,000 subscribers, as well as the author of the best-selling online courses on JTC Guitar.

He is also the band leader of the Martin Miller Session Band, a YouTube cover project that comes together a few times a year to record together and who have collaborated with artists such as Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons & Mark Lettieri. Previously he has collaborated with Ibanez for two Martin Miller signature guitars, the MM1 and MM7.

The Concept

As a Laney amplifier endorsee the idea was hatched where for the first time ever, we would look to construct a PC within Martin's favourite compact cabinet, the 1x12" LT112, from Laney's Lionheart range.

We started by replacing the speaker cone with a custom mount for the slow running 200mm ARGB Coolermaster fan that sits just behind speaker cloth, adding a colour customisable gentle glow to the front of the system. The noise optimised cooling also extended to replacing the handles on the sides with custom mounting panels, each with a 120mm be quiet! Lightwings fan, so that the glow of the system continues to emanate out of the sides of the case.

Customised housing and visuals

We replaced the rear of the system with a solid laser cut wooden panel, which facilitates venting and internal mounting of the Corsair ICUE H150I cooler along with cut outs for the motherboard I/O panel, card slots and power supply. With the radiator mounted to this rear panel, the fans also help to pull the hot air though the system, allowing for the venting of any system heat out of the rear of the cabinet.

What's Inside?

The powerful system built within the Laney cabinet features the very latest flagship AMD 9950X CPU, offering huge amount performance across its 16 core / 32 thread layout. It's then matched with 64GB of DDR5 5600MHz memory, along with a total of 3TB of super fast M.2. NVMe Corsair MP700 storage. The inclusion of fast storage and memory helps to ensure quicker project load times and snappy handling when working with large audio or video files.

To support video editing within this setup we have an ASUS RTX 4070 Super Dual EVO graphics card, with it's relatively short form design helping us squeeze plenty of GPU performance in to the space available. With a total 12GB of onboard V-RAM, this card allows for effortless handling of 4K video editing and the GPU cooler design features a semi-passive fan mode. This will fully spin down the GPU fans when working under lighter loads like audio editing, only once more spinning back up again when dealing with heavier video processing workloads.

With the ASUS X670E Creator board sat at the heart of the system, we find that we have a good variety of connectivity to the outside world. In networking terms we find two ethernet ports offering either 2.5Gb and 10Gb connections, ensuring fast connectivity both when online or linking to other network based devices. Finishing off the networking options we also find fast Wi-Fi 6E connectivity rounding out the package. The rear of the system also offers 8 various Type A USB connectors, along with a regular USB 3 type-C and two of the newest USB4.0 ports. Part of the USB4.0 spec includes Thunderbolt 3.0 support, so these ports are dual purpose USB/Thunderbolt connectors which will help to ensure great support for all current and future studio additions.
