About Goonhilly

Goonhilly has been at the forefront of the satellite communications industry for over 50 years, first catching the public’s imagination in 1962 when its large dish, Aerial-1, known as Arthur, received the first transatlantic TV signal - a speech by President Kennedy via Telstar, the earliest communications satellite. In 1969, the Apollo 11 Moon landing truly signalled the dawn of the space age, as Arthur beamed Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon to a global audience of around 600 million. Arthur went on to broadcast Muhammad Ali fights and the 1985 Live Aid concerts.

Goonhilly now occupies a large site on the Goonhilly Downs, on the west coast of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, home to multiple dishes, satellite ground stations, antennas, and since 2019, a Tier III equivalent datacentre and AI institute.

Why Goonhilly and Scan AI?

Opened in 2019, the Goonhilly datacentre was launched as a managed green high performance compute platform for AI and ML workflows on demand - all designed and installed in conjunction with Scan as its strategic infrastructure partner. The datacentre was one of the first organisations in the UK to deploy a liquid immersion cooling system from Submer to mitigate the power demands of high performance computing (HPC). Goonhilly’s green platform is designed to meet the data-intensive needs of the automotive, life sciences and space / aerospace marketplaces. Plus its onsite array of solar panels can support the datacentre’s full power requirements of 500kW and local wind power will be added to the mix shortly.

Goonhilly’s goal is to create a UK hub for AI, deep learning and machine learning services that acts as a marketplace and allows academia and enterprise to collaborate and share ideas. Scan, as an NVIDIA Elite Partner, has a team of AI specialists that will manage the installation of your chosen equipment - providing everything you need to develop and scale your AI initiatives, from deep learning frameworks to architectural and engineering support.

Goonhilly Services

The new managed platform delivered in collaboration with Scan, offers high performance GPU-based compute and storage for decentralised and centralised AI and machine learning applications to meet the data-intensive needs of the automotive, life sciences and space and aerospace marketplaces. By provisioning both compute and AI and machine learning resources on demand, customers can reduce the cost of deployment and accelerate time to market.
