Lewitt RAY

Microphone Technology Evolved, a focus on autofocus

RAY Microphone

With a history of inventions, Vienna has been the birthplace of many of mankind’s giant leaps forward. From the eight-octave grand piano, psychotherapy and even the world’s first electric car, inventors have long been drawn to the creative allure of the Austrian capital. For Roman Perschon, Austrian born inventor and head honcho at Lewitt Microphones, Vienna called and Perschon answered. Lewitt was founded in 2010 with the purpose of creating professional microphones and interfaces with a new level of quality and innovation.

AURA Technology

Lewitt RAY is a once in a generation leap forward in microphone technology which has for many decades remained unchanged. The basic principle of the microphone is simple, an XLR +48v powered large diaphragm condenser microphone aimed at both home and studio use. So, what’s the twist? Lewitt Ray comes powered with AURA technology, a filter that detects your distance from the front of the microphone and maintains both volume and tonality regardless of how far back you are from the mic (up to a sensible point, don’t leave the room, exit the house and get on the bus and expect miracles). Under testing you can move a considerable distance away from the mic and it will still sound like your proximity is close. more importantly it matches tone as well. The deep timbre you get from being almost next to a condenser microphone is almost the same at a fair distance. With any other microphone, distance not only reduces volume but thins out the tone and naturally adds room reflections, with Lewitt Ray when AURA is turned on you get almost imperceptible volume loss and tonality reduction when moving away from the microphone.

Flexible Condenser

The use cases for this kind of technology are off the charts. For home streaming where you can find yourself more animated, moving around due to long hours streaming you are not going to be aurally penalised for moving back and forth. Singers are not going to suffer any loss in quality if they get more animated during a recording or performance. Another fantastic innovation utilising AURAs distance filter is the ability for an intelligent mute. You can set the mute via distance, so, if you are streaming but need to have a private conversation with your better half you can create a safe space monitored by Lewitt’s clever tech.

Conclusion

With great audio performance, innovative tech and an incredible price point the RAY comes strongly for the mid to top end Shure mics and certainly for lower quality USB mics often favoured by streamers. The quality of the microphone when set apart from these technologies is incredible and perfect for streaming and recording and comes in under £300 with a pop filter and shock mount included as standard.
