Lycom ST-173-7 Covert mSATA SSD as High Speed 7mm 2.5" IDE SSD Drive is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super working solution This is a super workable solution. Managed to convert IDE hard drive from IBM T42 Laptop to Msata drive. Also O/S upgraded from Win XP to Win 7 Pro. A renewed stable platform for an historical reknown computer laptop. Fits nicely into hard drive carriage frame and has clearance enough for smooth integration into laptop body. Tried other solutions which did not work. I am happy to report that this is a nice affordable solution. Can definitely recommend. 5 Stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good device works well at machine level; that I can't get a clone of Windows 10 1709 to work on the new mSATA SSD is surely not down to this device, which allows File Explorer full access to everything.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy for upgrading an old laptop If, like me, you end up with an old IDE based laptop that is still useful but want to use a more modern SSD, try this device. I had a 64 Gig micro SSD going spare and an old Dell Latitude laptop that was worth keeping. Installing the SSD into the caddy is easy and then just plug it back in place of the original IDE Hard Drive. Works really well and saved me buying a new laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect upgrade for an old Gateway Laptop MX8550GB Previously fitted with a 250GB WD2500BEVE EIDE drive which eventually crashed with hard errors. Not worth saving the laptop without a larger drive but no prospect of a larger PATA drive. Googling and some lateral thinking revealed this Lycom adapter on the Scan site so with some trepidation I paired it with a 500GB Crucial MX200, Internal mSATA SSD and took the plunge. It took seconds to fit the SSD to the adaptor and plug the adaptor in place of the original 44 pin EIDE drive. The laptop has successfully run for a month now, still on WinXP SP3 and noticeably faster than with the mechanical disc. No problems whatever, and the wife's thrilled with her rejuvenated laptop on steroids ;-) Perfect upgrade. Scan's order processing plus status emails were impeccable BTW.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal to upgrade an old laptop to SSD This gadget is just what you need to upgrade an old laptop to SSD. Just add an mSATA ssd, to it, and fit it back in the laptop where the old mechanical hard drive was. You won't get the high sustained data transfer rates that SSDs are normally capable of, but you will still get blazing fast random access times, and high IOPs, so your laptop will feel much more snappy. Also as you can now get mSATA SSDs in much larger sizes than PATA 2.5 inch mechanical hard drives, you can get a capacity increase as well. One gotcha to be aware of, is the master/slave jumper. If you put this in a USB enclosure to copy your files, then make sure the jumper is removed, as otherwise your enclosure might not recognise the drive. Mine did not, and I thought it was faulty until I realised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An elegant solution to replace an ide hard drive I used this device in a 2004 Dell inspiron 5150 which was showing signs of imminent failure, ie loads of clicking noises. As i quickly found out 2.5 ide laptop drives are very hard to find new. I incorporated a 60 gigabite Msata ssd with the Lycom and now have a quiet fast laptop. Its just as shame the ide interface limits the ssd max speed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly whatI I needed The Scan website is very easy to navigate and search. It's extensive in the components it stocks and descriptions are good. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal for laptop upgrade I used this with an mSATA drive. All worked faultlessly. The laptop is silent apart from when the fan kicks in (less frequently than previously) and there is an increase in speed.

What is the largest hard drive that this adapter can address?

In the description three maximum sizes are mentioned, 188gb being the largest and a 48bit LBA also mentioned which implies drives which can be terabytes in size. I would like to consider using this adapter with a 256gb Msata drive. Will it work with a 256gb drive or is 128gb the largest suitable?
Asked by: Mikei
I have this working with a 256GB msata kingston drive. Hope this helps. New O/S installation recommended.

Is this converter Marvell 88SA8052 based ?

Asked by: Blogux
Hi, unfortunately, the manufacturer does not state whether this product is Marvell 88SA8052 based so we would not be able to guarantee this. I would recommend speaking to the manufacturer about this. Regards,
