What is an Intel Network Card or NIC?
The Network Interface card or NIC, is the workstation or server component that allows wired connection with a network and the wider Internet. Although all systems will come with a NIC installed as standard, it is worth considering upgrading to a higher-spec Intel card for extra throughput or additional ports if you’re working with large data sets or want to add resiliency.
The Intel NIC Range Explained
The Intel NIC range has several families based on connectivity speed starting with the 500 series featuring multi-port 1Gbps speeds, then onto the 700 series supporting connectivity of either 10, 25 or 40Gbps. The 800 series of NICs supports 100Gbps and features low latency off-loading technology. Fibre optic transceiver connectivity is also provided by way of the Intel Silicon Photonics range.
PCIe 4.0 ARCHITECTURE
Improve application efficiency and network performance with innovative and versatile capabilities that optimise high-performance server workloads such as NFV, storage, HPC-AI and hybrid cloud. The 800 series of Intel NICs now features PCIe 4.0 architecture delivering twice the bandwidth over the previous generation.
HIGH THROUGHPUT LOW LATENCY
Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) provides high throughput and low-latency performance for modern high-speed Ethernet by eliminating three major sources of networking overhead: TCP/IP stack process, memory copies, and application context switches. Intel Ethernet 800 Series Network Adapters support all major storage transport protocols, including iWARP, RoCEv2, and NVMe over TCP.
APPLICATION DEVICE QUEUES
Application Device Queues (ADQ) technology improves performance scalability and predictability by dedicating queues to key workloads, delivering predictable high performance through dramatically reduced jitter. Increasing the predictability of application response times by lowering jitter enables more compute servers to be assigned to a task and can allow more users to access the system, providing a better end-user experience.
